Reading Fluency: The Water Cycle

Read the passage aloud as smoothly and accurately as you can. A helper starts a timer, then stops it after one minute (or when you finish) and notes how many words you reached. Read the same passage three times over a few days and watch your words-per-minute grow.

Read aloudWords
The water on Earth today is the same water that10
dinosaurs once drank. It is never used up. Instead, it20
moves round and round in a journey called the water30
cycle.31
The journey begins when the sun warms the oceans, lakes41
and rivers. Some of that water turns into an invisible51
gas called water vapour and rises up into the air. This62
step is called evaporation.66
High in the sky the air is cold, so the vapour cools and79
turns back into tiny droplets. Billions of these87
droplets clustered together form a cloud. This step is96
called condensation.98
When the droplets grow heavy enough, they fall back to108
the ground as rain, snow or hail. This step is called119
precipitation. The water flows across the land and back128
into the rivers and oceans, and then the whole journey138
starts over again.141
