Reading Fluency: The Locked Bicycle

Read the passage aloud as smoothly and accurately as you can. A helper starts a timer, then stops it after one minute (or when you finish) and notes how many words you reached. Read the same passage three times over a few days and watch your words-per-minute grow.

When Mateo wheeled his bike into the rack on Monday, he11
had no idea it would still be there on Friday. By22
lunchtime, someone had chained a second bicycle to his,31
looping a heavy lock through both frames. There was no41
name, no note, nothing at all to explain it.50
He tried the school office first, but no one had60
reported a lost bike. He asked around his own class and71
the class next door, and everyone just shrugged. Each80
afternoon he checked the rack, half hoping the mystery89
bike would be gone, and each afternoon it was still99
there, gathering dew.102
By Thursday, Mateo had almost given up when a small boy113
from the younger years crept over, red-faced. He had122
borrowed his brother's lock, muddled up which bike was131
his, and then been too embarrassed to admit it all week.142
He fished a key from his pocket and freed Mateo's bike153
in a single click.157
Mateo could have been angry. Instead, he remembered how166
long it had taken the boy just to say sorry, and he178
decided that saying it at all had taken more courage188
than staying quiet ever would.193
