Reading Fluency: The Loose Floorboard

Read the passage aloud as smoothly and accurately as you can. A helper starts a timer, then stops it after one minute (or when you finish) and notes how many words you reached. Read the same passage three times over a few days and watch your words-per-minute grow.

Every night, Priya heard a soft creak from the corner of11
her room. She told herself it was nothing, but the sound22
still made her pull the blanket over her head.31
One afternoon, while the sun was still bright, she40
decided to be brave and find out what it was. She51
pressed on the floorboards near the corner, one by one.61
The third board wobbled and gave the same familiar70
creak.71
Priya lifted it carefully. Underneath, in a dusty gap,80
sat a small tin box. Inside were three glass marbles, a91
foreign coin, and a folded note. The note read: "To101
whoever finds this, hello from 1974." Priya grinned. The110
creak was not scary at all. It had been guarding a121
secret for years, just waiting for someone to listen.130
