What curriculum does Western Australia use?

Western Australia teaches the Western Australian Curriculum, maintained by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). It is an adaptation of the national Australian Curriculum for Kindergarten and Pre-primary through to Year 10, kept deliberately close to the national structure and strands with WA adjustments and its own achievement standards.

WA is updating its curriculum to match the national Version 9 refresh. The revised English and Health and Physical Education were available for implementation from 2025, while Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and Technologies were for familiarisation in 2025 and implementation in 2026. Check the SCSA outline for the current status of the subject you teach.

How it maps to the Australian Curriculum

WA follows the national year naming with one change at the start: the first year of full time school is Pre-primary, roughly the national Foundation year, followed by Years 1 to 10. So Year 3 in WA is the same school year as Year 3 nationally.

Because the Western Australian Curriculum is an adaptation rather than a rewrite, the mathematics maps very closely to the national curriculum. Most national Mathematics content applies with only WA framing, which makes our nationally mapped worksheets a strong fit.

Years 11 and 12 in Western Australia

After Year 10, Western Australia students work towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), issued by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). SproutSheets worksheets target Foundation to Year 10, so senior secondary is reference only. How Years 11 and 12 work across Australia.

Using SproutSheets in Western Australia

Our worksheets use the national ACARA v9 Mathematics codes and national year names, both of which line up with WA for Years 1 to 10. For the first year of school, use our Foundation page for Pre-primary.

In practice, pick the WA year you teach, use the matching SproutSheets year page, and check the sheet against the SCSA achievement standard. Because WA tracks the national curriculum closely, most content transfers with no changes. Maths answer keys are computed in code, so they are never wrong.

WA calls the first year of school Pre-primary, which sits after an earlier Kindergarten year. On SproutSheets, use the Foundation page for Pre-primary.
