Emperor penguins live in Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth. They cannot fly, but they are excellent swimmers. Their black and white feathers are thick and keep out the icy water.

In winter, the mother lays one egg. Then something surprising happens: the father keeps the egg warm, balancing it on his feet under a flap of skin. The fathers stand close together in a huge group to share warmth while the mothers go to sea to find food. When the chick hatches, both parents take turns feeding it.
