What is addition?

Addition means putting numbers together to find the total. The numbers you add are called addends and the answer is the sum. You can add by counting on, using number bonds, or writing numbers in columns and regrouping when a column reaches ten.

Examples

• 3 + 5 = 8 (three and five make eight).
• 10 + 6 = 16.
• 24 + 13 = 37.

Quick facts

• The order does not change the answer: 3 + 5 and 5 + 3 both make 8.
• Adding 0 leaves a number unchanged.
