Teaching guide

What students learn

Describe the position of objects in three dimensions, including with a three-dimensional coordinate system and digital tools.

How to teach it

Plot and read points as (across, up), x before y, starting from the origin. Extend to four quadrants and describe moves and reflections.

Worked example
A point is at (3, 2). Move it 5 right and 5 up. Write the new coordinates.
Answer: (8, 7)
Why: x: 3 + 5 = 8; y: 2 + 5 = 7

Generated and checked in code, so it is correct.

Watch out for

Reversing the coordinates (up before across) and mis-signing points in the negative quadrants.
