Decodable Reader: The Red Hen

Read the story out loud, sounding out each word. Then answer the questions together. A grown-up can read the questions aloud.

For the grown-up: Decodable reader, Stage 2: All five short vowels (CVC). Every word can be sounded out using only the phonics taught up to this stage: the remaining short vowels e, o and u, so every short-vowel CVC word is now readable (bed, dog, sun). The only exceptions are the permitted heart words (learned by sight): the, a, i, to, of, was, he, she, we, me, be, go, no, so, do, you, my, by, are, they, said, put.

Peg is a red hen. Peg sat on a big log. The sun is up. A fox ran to the hen. The fox is a bad fox. Peg ran to a box. The fox did not get Peg.
