Decodable Reader: Rex the Wet Dog
Read the story out loud, sounding out each word. Then answer the questions together. A grown-up can read the questions aloud.
For the grown-up: Decodable reader, Stage 2: All five short vowels (CVC). Every word can be sounded out using only the phonics taught up to this stage: the remaining short vowels e, o and u, so every short-vowel CVC word is now readable (bed, dog, sun). The only exceptions are the permitted heart words (learned by sight): the, a, i, to, of, was, he, she, we, me, be, go, no, so, do, you, my, by, are, they, said, put.
Tom has a dog. The dog is Rex. Rex is wet. Rex sat on a log in the sun. The sun is hot. Rex ran to get a nut. A bug is on the nut. Rex did not get the nut. Tom had a big mug. Tom let Rex sip. Rex is not wet.
