What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction, such as 2 1/2. It shows an amount bigger than one whole. Mixed numbers and improper fractions describe the same value in different ways, so 2 1/2 is the same as 5/2.
Examples
- 2 1/2 means two wholes and one half.
- 7/4 written as a mixed number is 1 3/4.
- 3 2/3 is the same as 11/3.

- To change an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the top by the bottom.
