What is a digit?
A digit is any one of the ten symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Numbers are built from digits, and each digit's value depends on its place in the number (see place value). The number 358 has three digits.
Examples
- 45 is a two-digit number.
- The digits in 207 are 2, 0 and 7.
- 9 is the largest single digit.
Quick facts
- There are exactly ten digits (0-9).
- The same digit can mean different amounts: the 3 in 30 means thirty, in 300 it means three hundred.
